Development of Origami Hydraulic Damper with Damping Force Proportional to the Square of Motion Velocity.
Hydraulic dampers commonly used to reduce structural vibration are typically of the cylinder type. In this study, we proposed a new origami hydraulic damper that leverages the free expansion and contraction characteristics of a cylindrical origami structure. It can be demonstrated that the damping resistance force generated when hydraulic oil passes through a small hole at the end of the cylindrical origami structure is proportional to the square of the motion velocity. The test experiment confirmed that the developed origami hydraulic damper, utilizing this damping characteristic, outperforms the existing cylinder-type hydraulic dampers.
